2019 Otage Cabernet Sauvignon

2019 Cabernet Sauvignon

Double Gold - San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
96 Points - The Sommelier Company

A beguiling, intricate beauty. Intensely aromatic, the aromas are generous but precise and focused, with salient cassis, fig, plum and cocoa shading into pencil shavings, fresh loam, black licorice and violet notes all wrapped in subtle smoke. Suggestions of mint and sage add interest. These qualities seamlessly shift to the palate where rich dark chocolate is enlivened by bursts of bright acidity that flicker like starlight. These top notes persist through the finish giving the wine extraordinary dynamic range and lovely balance. Large-framed but lithe and supple, it is tender and pliable at its core despite youthful exuberance. On its elongated finish, still peppery tannins stimulate without gripping, the impressive fruit persistence eventually giving way to stony minerality as it fades.

Really approachable now, the peppery tannins will turn silky with some age. This is a masterful job of drink-now accessibility and aging potential. It has the freshness of youth with a rich manifold that should age beautifully.

2020 White Wine

Shiny bright rays reminiscent of sunshine light up the glass. Pure, clean, and aromatic with hints of citrus, key lime, orange blossom and tart kiwi round out the vanilla-laced, honeysuckle nose. The first pass across the palate reveals both structure and complexity in this bright white blend of several Italian varietals. Smooth across the front, the ample acidity on the backend creates a yearning for more. Dry and crisp, flavors of apple, pear, honey and minerals, layered on top of a lemon curd and citrus base, create the framework for this food-friendly wine. Multi-layered, it will stand up to, and pair very well with, distinctive culinary offerings such as an array of cheeses, fresh seared seafood, spicy Asian dishes, grilled chicken or pork tenderloin, and ceviche.

2013 Cabernet Sauvignon

Double Gold, 97 Points - Los Angeles Invitational Wine Competition

100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a premier vineyard in St. Helena, California. This is a radiant beauty, a remarkable marriage of elegance, vitality, and richness from one of Napa’s great vintages. Aromas of dense black cherry and blueberry with nuances of tobacco leaf and cinnamon are enveloped by licorice, well-integrated cedar, and shadings of dusty earth, fringed by suggestions of brown sugar.

In the mouth, sculpted acidity complements the rich fruit. Despite the opulence, the wine feels supple and lively, generating explosive energy, then gliding patiently toward a lengthy finish. Finely polished tannins give the wine heft but astringency holds off until late in the finish, highlighting remarkable fruit persistence on a bed of velvet, which gives the finish a charge of mouthwatering panache.

2018 Cabernet Sauvignon

This is an incredibly luxurious Cabernet Sauvignon—rich with cassis, raspberry and stewed cranberry on the fruit side of the profile, given warmth and depth by oak spice, baking spices, ginger and subtle licorice. With time, there are fresh flowers, leather, chocolate.

The complexity and expressiveness of flavor are notable but it’s really the texture, weight, and mouthfeel that make this a standout. At just a few years old, its tannins are already supple and velvety—its big and amplified flavors aren’t saddled by any over-heavy body or any hot, alcoholic impressions on the finish. It’s right on the sweet spot of flavorful yet refined Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

With ample acid, this wine is widely pairable and a sure match with typical Cabernet Sauvignon pairings—steak, grilled meats, lamb and green vegetables. But it’s also quite enjoyable on its own—sumptuous, mouth-filling, and plump. Given how intricate it is now, we look forward to what a few more years in the cellar will do for its complexity.

2021 Pinot Noir

Santa Cruz Mountains AVA

At first glance, this Pinot Noir is deeply garnet in color. Yet a closer look will reveal an ombre tone around the rim. A bit edgy in its youth, the ample acidity will broaden this wine over time. Notes of light pepper, clove, fresh garden chive, and an herbal earthiness linger on the nose. Flavors of cranberry, raspberry, and tart cherries backed by the well-balanced structure of a coastal mountain wine emerge on the palate. Given time to unfold, this wine is silky and smooth offering a wave of velvet that moves through the mouth. Multifaceted and amenable to a wide array of cuisine, pair it well with peppered ahi, rosemary wrapped pork tenderloin, roasted mushrooms, salmon rillettes with buttered crostini, or even a finale of a feast such as tart green apple pie topped with a blanket of finely-shredded sharp cheddar cheese.
